Extraction of Copper from the Chalcopyrite ore  or copper pyrite

Reaction:

2CuFeS2+2SiO2+4O2→Cu2S+2FeSiO3+3SO2

Step 1: The ore is heated with silica in the presence of oxygen.

The copper II in the copper ore is reduced to get copper I. In the process of extracting copper I from the copper II of chalcopyrite, most of the sulfur in the ore turns into sulfur dioxide gas and the iron in the ore turns into iron II silicate. Later the slugs have been removed in the further process.

Step 2: Conversion of Copper (I) sulfide into blister copper (Pure form of copper)

Cu2S+O2→2Cu+SO2
