Reduction occurs in cathode while oxidation occurs in anode. Suppose we take the electrolysis of dilute sodium chloride in the process.

During the electrolysis of the dilute NaCl soln. the reactions taking place are:

Catode: 2H2O + 2e(-) 》 H2 + 2OH(-)

Anode: 2H2O 》 O2 + 4H(+) + 4e(-)

(or) 2Cl(-)(aq) 》Cl2(g) + 2e(-)
