A heterotroph is an organism that cannot produce its own food, relying instead on the intake of nutrition from other sources of organic carbon, mainly plant or animal matter. In the food chain, heterotrophs are primary, secondary and tertiary consumers, but not producers.

Answer: Heterotrophs are organisms that cannot make their own food through the process of photosynthesis. Heterotrophs are classified into :-

a) Saprophytic

b) Symbiotic

c) Insectivorous

d) Parasitic

Explanation:

a) Saprophytic Mode of Nutrition :- The organisms which exhibit this mode of nutrition feed on dead and decaying matter for energy.

For Eg :- The daily lifestyle of fungi

b) Symbiotic Mode of Nutrition :- It is the interactive between two organisms to be both mutually benefited.

For Eg :- Lichens - The relationship between fungi and algae

c) Insectivorous Mode :- In actual, insectivorous plants are autotrophic but to complete their nitrogen need, they feed upon insects. So they are carnivorous too.

For Eg :- Pitcher Plant, Venus Fly Trap

d) Parasitic Mode of Nutrition :- Parasitic nutrition is a mode of heterotrophic nutrition where a parasitic organism lives inside the body of another type of organism (a host) and gets nutrition directly from the body of the host.

For Eg :- Cuscuta Plant
