If a and b are rational numbers, then a + b is also a rational number. This property is known as closure property.

» Example:

Let us consider a as 2/5 and b as 1/6.

2/5 + 1/6 = (12+5) / 30 = 17/30

17/30 is also a rational number along with 2/5 and 1/6.
