Blood is usually composed of a watery fluid called plasma and floating bodies termed formed elements (such an example, blood corpuscles). The Blood forms about 30-35% of ECF (Extra cellular fluids). The volume (exactly in adults) of blood in an adult person of 70kg approx. weight is about 5.5 litres. It is slightly alkaline in nature with a fluid having pH 7.4. pH of blood in arteries is actually more than that of veins.

Functions of Blood:

On the basis of the above description, the general and the most common functions of the Blood, are:
1) Transportation of Food materials from different parts of the body or connections to the main recipient.
2) Transportation of Respiratory gases through surface exchange and transport of waste gases.
3) Transportation of hormones to the needy parts of the body.
4) Transportation of excretory matters to aid in the process of defecation, egestion and elimination of wastes.
5) Transportation of Heat to maintain a regulatory body temperature to a optimum temperature.
6) Defensive action against the infection by sending impulses to key white blood corpuscles and hence activating the immune response from the immune system.
7) Tempreature regulation after the transport of heat through essential body organs.
8) Maintaing a perfect osmotic pressure and clearing out any extra water to keep a water balance.
9) Maintenance of proper pH in all of the organs including the pH of blood under it.
10) Prevention of excessive loss of blood through ruptures and wounds which are cleared by platelets and blood clotting and coagulation process.
11) Assists in the advent of healing (as stated earlier) through a series of processes.
12) Striking the Maintenance of physiological cooperation between the organs and their affiliated human body.

Functions of blood :

• Blood transports oxygen, nutrients ,hormones etc. to every part of the body.

• It collects wastes from every part of the body.

• It helps in thermoregulation ,water balance and maintenance of pH of body.

• RBCs help in the transport of respiratory gases from lungs to tissues and back.

• WBCs are the soldiers of our body.
They help to fight disease by engulfing and destroying foreign bodies by producing antibodies and antitoxins.

• Blood platelets help in the clotting of blood at the site of the injury.
