Natural gas was formed millions of years ago along with petroleum when microscopic sea plants and animals died and got buried under sand and mud. Under anaerobic conditions these plants and animals changed to gas and petroleum.

Natural gas consists of 95% of methane and 5% of a mixture of ethane, propane and ethylene.
