Write the composition of the following alloys.
(a) Gun Metal
(b) Duralumin
(c) German Silver
(d) Bronze
(e) Brass
Answers
Answer:
Gun Metal, a bronze, an alloy of copper, tin, and a small amount of zinc.
In addition to aluminium, the main materials in duralumin are copper, manganese and magnesium.
German silver, name for various alloys of copper, zinc, and nickel, sometimes also containing lead and tin.
a yellowish-brown alloy of copper with up to one-third tin.
a yellow alloy of copper and zinc.
Explanation:
The composition of the alloys is as follows-
(a) Gun Metal-
⇒ This alloy is also popularly known as Red Brass in America. It contains copper, zinc, & tin. Where the highest percentage of metal used in it is copper at 88%, 8-10% tin & 2-4% of zinc. Gun metal is primarily used for making guns and acts as a replacement for steel.
(b) Duralumin-
⇒ Duralumin is mainly an alloy of aluminum as the name suggests. The proportion of aluminum in the alloy is 90%, with 4% copper and some less percentage of magnesium and manganese.
(c) German Silver-
⇒ This alloy is also known as nickel silver, new silver, nickel brass, etc. As by the name it does not contain any percentage of silver in it. It is an alloy of copper (60%), and the rest of the metals as nickel with 20% and sometimes zinc with 20%.
(d) Bronze-
⇒ The most common alloy of copper again, with 12% of the metal copper in it. The percentage of copper is mixed by some metals and non-metals sometimes or even metalloids sometimes. These metals include aluminum, manganese, nickel, and zinc. The non-metals & metalloids such as phosphorus and silicon respectively are also mixed with copper sometimes.
(e) Brass-
⇒ Brass is also an alloy of copper and zinc in proportions to make the result hard in nature. The chemical obtained defines the proportion of the metals used. The ores of zinc and copper are used to form this alloy.
