River deltas form when a river carrying sediment reaches either a body of water, such as a lake, ocean, or reservoir, another river that cannot remove the sediment quickly enough to stop delta formation, or an inland region where the water spreads out and deposits sediments.

Write the conditions for delta formation ?

Answer

The ideal favourable conditions for the formation and growth of delta include :

  1. There should be accelerated rate of erosion in the catchment area of concerned river . it in creases the amount of sediment supply .
  2. The river should have long middle and lower course . it declines the speed of water flow at the moment of the river .
  3. There should be suitable place in the form of shallow sea and lake shores at mouth of the river .
  4. There should be no strong currents and tides at the mouth of the river .

Example : such ideal conditions are found at the mouth river Ganga and Brahmaputra .
