Explanation:

In motor insulated copper wire ABCD is placed between two powerful magnets N and S. The ends of ABCD are connected to split rings P and Q, which are connected to brushes X and Y and they are connected to battery and key in the external circuit.

When current flows along ABCD it rotates anticlockwise.When it completes half rotation, the split rings changes their contact with brushes so that in the next half of the rotation current flows along DCBA. The reversing of current is repeated at each half rotation, gives rise to continuous rotation of the coil.

Function of the split rings in motor:

Split rings acts as commutator in electric motor.
