It's said he gave a rule for solving quadratic equations, but that had been done before by al-Khwarizmi, Euclid, and even the Old Babylonians almost 4000 years ago. That should not be considered his main contribution.

His writings were a compendium of the known mathematics in India of the time, spanning topics in geometry, computations, verbal algebra, number theory, combinatorics, finite arithmetic and geometric progressions, and a variety of applied mathematics. His more advanced number theory included methods to solve what's now called Pell's equation.
