Base & Index

Example: 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2: Here, 2 is multiplied by itself 8 times. This is written as 2⁸ in short. This is the index form of multiplication.

Here, 2 is called the base, and 8, the index or the exponent.

Example: 5 × 5 × 5 × 5 = 5⁴

Here 5⁴ is in the index form. In the number ‘5 raised to the power 4’ or ‘5 raised to 4’, or ‘the 4th power of 5’.

Generally, if α is any number, α × α × α × ...(m times)  = αᵐ

Read αᵐ as ‘α raised to the power m’ or ‘the mᵗʰ power of α’. Here m is a natural number.

∴ 5⁴  = 5 × 5 × 5 × 5 = 625. Or, the value of the number 5⁴ = 625.

Similarly,

\sf {\bigg [ \dfrac{-2}{3} \bigg ] = \dfrac{-2}{3} \times  \dfrac{-2}{3} \times  \dfrac{-2}{3} = \dfrac{-8}{27} \; means \; that \; the \; value \; of \; \bigg [ \dfrac{-2}{3}\bigg ]^3 is \; \dfrac{-8}{27} .}

Note that,

  • 7¹ = 7, 10¹ = 10.

The first power of any number is that number itself.

Henceforth, α¹ = α
