Like adjectives, some adverbs can only be compared, but many (e.g., now, where, once, then etc.), by their very nature, cannot. Only adverbs of manner, degree & time can be compared.

  • By adding 'er' & 'est' to an adverb.
  • By adding 'more' & 'most' before the positive of adverbs of more than one syllable.

EXCEPTION 'earlier' & 'earliest' are the comparative & superlative of 'early'.
