Following are the demerits of democracy :
(i) Unstable government Lots of political parties are allowed to criticise the government and its policies. Sometimes, it leads to the downfall of the ruling party and re-elections in the country. This gives instability to the government.
(ii) Slow and inefficient government The most common demerit of democracy is that, it is slow in its functioning. The decision-making process involves long debates and deliberations in the Parliament. This takes a lot of time before the decisions are actually taken.
(iii) Incompetence Democracy gives every individual the right to voice his concern. As a result, everybody focusses on his personal interests and not the -
collective interests. This sometimes leads to incompetent and wrong selections of the candidates in the government.
(iv) Role of money in a democracy Money plays an important role at the time of the elections. A lot of money is needed to organise demonstrations, public meetings and speeches. Those candidates are chosen in the elections, who can raise lot of money for the party.

DEMERITS OF DEMOCRACY

  • Leaders keep changing due to which it leads to political instability :- It means that in a particular period of time leaders change due to which there is instability. For instance:- Let us take example of India where in every five years the leaders change so any leader who have understood the way of serving people and just started his work then in few years his works will remain incomplete because of lack of time.

  • Democracy is all about the power of leaders and political competition due to which there is no scope of morality :- It implies that the political leaders only look for the competition of other leaders and demerits of the opposition due to which he/she never concentrates on his/her work and by this to win an election they forget all their morality and wish of people

  • As many people are involved in decisions making it lead to delays :- It is also true as there are many steps by which conclusion comes due to which delays are occurred. For example:- To pass a bill of law we have to pass it in Parliament and then Rajya Sabha due to which much of time is consumed and it leads to delays.
