French Colonialism was resisted by many in Vietnam and the way forward led to many debates within Vietnam between 1880 and 1940. The differences that these revolutionaries held are described as follows:
While Phan Boi Chau wanted to use the monarchy, strengthen it, and drive out the French, Phan chu Trinh wanted to raise the people, abolish the monarchy and drive out the French
Phan Boi Chau was educated in the Confucian tradition and favoured stronger ties with China and the monarchy.
Phan Boi Chau lamented the twin loss of sovereignty and severing of ties with China.
Phan Chu Trinh accepted western thought and believed in the French idea of Liberty and wanted to abolish the Monarchy and create a republic. He accused the French Government of not following its ideals of Liberty, and wanted the French to set up legal and educational institutions.
The only similarity that existed between the two was that both Phan Boi Chau and Phan Chu Trinh wanted to see a stronger Vietnam, free of French rule and giving employment and income to vast majority of illiterate peasants of Vietnam.
