distance is the total path length covered by a body.while displacement is shortest length between initial and final position is called displacement.

Distance travelled by a body is the total distance travelled by it wheras the displacement is the shortest path . In case of the above example , if a traingle is drawn with the three vertices named as A , B and C , Total distance (AB + BC) will be 12+9 . The displacement will be AC.
