General Elections: The general election are held after a stipulated period of time. For example, the term of the elected members of Lok Sabha or Vidhan Sabha is for five years after which the Lok Sabha or Vidhan Sabha stands dissolved. Elections are held after five years in all constituencies at the same time, either on the same day or within a few days.

Mid-term Elections: Mid-term elections are held, if a government (central and state) fails a confidence motion in the Parliament or state assembly and no other alternative to the government is possible. As these elections are conducted before the end of the term of a government, they are called mid-term elections.
