General purpose software fulfill some predefined need. Like it can be a editor compiler ftpclient download manager browser file manager etc . all these software fulfill some basic requirement and cater to masses. Although there features might be little/more different, but they are created for masses.
On the other hand custom made software are built for some specific purpose/task may be for a specific client. Which may have some specific features, which general purpose software may not have.
Some application packages focus on a single task, such as word processing; others, called integrated software include several applications. User-written softwaretailors systems to meet the user's specificneeds.
