short circuiting: when the live wire and neutral wire come in accidental contact due to the damage in the insulation the resistance becomes very low .this phenomenon is known as short circuiting.it can cause sparks and fire.
overloading:when current flowing is more than the permissible value it can cause overloading.it may be caused due to:
1.short circuit
2.accidental hike in supply voltage
3.when too many appliances connected to a single socket
