Answer:

Wool is an animal fiber: cotton is produced by a plant. Wool is a much warmer fiber to wear than cotton, one reason is that the fiber has a microscopically rough surface so that a cloth made from it will trap more air which insulates the person wearing it. Before the development of modern synthetics, a great deal of wool was worn on Everest: Mallory died in a woolen Harris tweed jacket, though he would almost certainly have had a down parka over it!

Wool is a more expensive fiber to produce than cotton, but was the basis of most military tunics and trousers for hundreds of years, due to the need for protection from the weather of soldiers in the field. It is less easily washed than cotton, since it reacts to hot water and rough handling by shrinking alarmingly and becoming stiff. It was once used a lot in cooler climates for babies clothes, but the difficulty of washing it properly has made it much less popular.
