Gymnosperms and angiosperms have special structures in their plant body to transport substances from one place to another. These structures are called vascular structures.

Plants have two types of vascular structures: xylem and phloem

  • Xylem helps in transport of water along with minerals from one part of the plant to another. phloem transport sugars and other substances from source to sink. Source is the place in plants where the sugars are formed and sink is the place where these sugars are required.
  • Xylem is present deep inside the plant body whereas phloem is present comparatively on outer side of the plant body.
  • Xylem is known to offer mechanical support to the plant. Phloem do not provide any kind of mechanical support.
  • The transport of substances in case of xylem is unidirectional and transport of substances in case of phloem is bidirectional.
