Musa is a herb perennating by means of a rhizome while Ravenala is a tree. Musa has an underground stem which is real and called rhizome. The pseudostem which rises above the ground is formed by long, sheathy leaf bases rolled upon each other. The stem in Ravenala is aerial and woody. Musa has spiral phyllotaxy while Ravenala has distichous with leaves arranged in two rows on same side. Musa has branched spadix infloroscence while Ravenala has compound cyme. The fruit in Musa is an elongated fleshy berry without seeds while its a capsule in Ravenala.
