Vertebrates, and a few invertebrates, have a closed circulatory system.Closed circulatory systems have the blood closed at all times within vessels of different size and wall thickness. In this type of system, blood is pumped by a heart through vessels, and does not normally fill body cavities.

Open and Closed system of circulation:
- An open system of circulation refers to that system of circulation where the circulatory fluid or the blood comes in direct contact with the cells of the body.
- A closed system of circulation refers to that system of circulation where the circulatory fluid or the blood flows through a channel of tubes called blood vessels and never comes in direct contact of the body cells.
- An open system can lead to the spreading of germs more easily, but a closed system prevents that.
- An open system is more primitive whereas the closed system is much evolved.
