Radicals are those that favor extreme/disruptive change. It can be applied to anything, democrats, republicans, progressives, regressives, liberals, conservatives.

Liberals are those that favor both equality and change small or large in so far as it is about improving the existing system/environment/situation.

The republican echo chamber has been redefining Liberalism since the 1980s in order to shepherd their minions into a group belief that liberals are gullible, lack wisdom, lead with emotions, and worship idols. This is far from the reality which has made it easy for republicans to manipulate their minions into voting against their interests because liberals have become their boogie man.
