The gram sabha, is the smallest part of the "3 - tier" governance system which is practiced in India. The first one is the Central level, State being the next one and finally the Gram Panchayats or the Gram sabhas.

Every village or in some cases, a group of villages has/have their own Gram Panchayat. The Panchayat is headed by a Sarpanch and is aided by an Upsarpanch, also to assist and to keep them in order, every GP has a government officer who presides in every meeting and gives his superiors the record of the functioning of the Sabha, this officer is known as the Gram Sevak.

The term of a Sarpanch is of 5 years. And during this, he has to look after the needs of residents in his constituency.

There are several departments on which the GP is active, and are presided by the committee members after meetings and by voting. Some of the departments are mentioned below-

Administrative department.

Development department.

And the most important, is the representative who has the responsibility of the people.
