The distance of the point (-3, -5) from y axis is -3 units

Given:

The point (-3,-5)

To find:

The distance of the point (-3,-5) from y axis

Solution:

The distance of a point from x and y axis:

  • As we know in two-dimensional plane, the two points lie along x-axis and y-axis.
  • The distance of a point from the y-axis will be equal to its x-coordinate or ordinate.
  • The distance of a point from the x-axis will be equal to its y-coordinate or ordinate.
  • Example:

        Distance of a point (x, y) from y axis is x units i.e x-coordinate.

        Distance of a point (2, 3) from x-axis is 3 units i.e y coordinate.

Given point (-3, -5)

The distance of the given point from y-axis = x-coordinate = -3

Therefore,

The distance of the point (-3, -5) from y axis is -3 units
