savitri bhai Phule along with her husband band jyothiba Phule played an important role in improving Womens right in Maharashtra. jyothiba set up a school for girls of ' untouchable ' castes in 1848 in pune. he trained savitri bhai to become the first woman teacher. Despite severe opposition to educating the lower caste girls, savitri bhai Phule continued to teach. After the death of jyotiba Phule, savitri bhai Phule took over the responsibilities of Satya shodhak Samaj. she presided over meetings and guided workers . savitri bhai worked relentlessly for the victims of plague, when she organised camps for poor children. it is said that she used to feed two thousand children every day during the epidemic.
Savitribai Phule 's contribution to education has made an "evergreen" mark & lasting impression on the historic pages of Indian women as a female empowerment crusader. She served as a messiah for all the female servants at a time when India was riddled with "women's outraged modesty".

She also worked along with her husband to discourage female infanticide & established a home, named " Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha", for the protection of widows,.
