In general, surface tension decreases whentemperature increases because cohesive forces decrease with an increase of molecular thermal activity. The influence of the surrounding environment is due to the adhesive action liquid molecules have at the interface.

Surface energy in solids, surface tension in liquids and 'pressure defects' in real gases arise from long range intermolecular attractive forces which exist between all molecules. This article is concerned with the effect of temperature on the surface tension of liquids.
