The electronic distribution of an atom having 12 electrons is: 2,8,2

  • The electrons in an atom revolve around the nucleus in definite shells called energy levels or orbits.
  • These shells are represented by 'n' and are called K, L, M, shells and so on.
  • According to the 2n² rule, the maximum number of electrons that can be accommodated  in the first shell (n=1) = 2(1)² = 2 and that in the second shell = 2(2)² = 8
  • Thus, For an atom having 12 electrons, the distribution for K, Land M shells will be 2,8,2.
