Electron dot structure for sodium and chlorine atom can be seen in the image attached.
Sodium have one electron in its valence shell and chlorine have 7 electrons in its valence shell and it requires only one electron to complete its octet that electron is donated by sodium and thus a bond is formed between the two atoms.
The bond that is formed is known as an ionic bond and as a ionic bond is formed , this compound is an ionic compound , it has a high melting point.
