look at Ca in the periodic table it has 2 electrons in its outer shell so you write 
.Ca. 
With 2 dots on it .... Then sulphur has 6 extra electrons .... So whats easier to do.... Get rid of 6 electrons or get 2 electrons 
So then you write 
:.S.: actually you write S with 6 dots around it. Then its a metal and a non metal reacting so you put the Ca's two electrons and draw 2 arrows to S 
And they have bonded
