It because the energy of 3d and 4s is almost same and this movement of electrons from s to d orbital makes them Transition metals. ... For Cr(24) d subshell contains 4 eleetron and 4s contains 2 electrons. If a electron can shift to 3d it will make the 3d sub-shell stable with half filled configuration.
