Electronic Configuration of X = 2,8,1 (Sodium)

Electronic Configuration of Y= 2,6 (Oxygen)

Valency of X = +1

Valency of Y = -2

So , by cross valency method the formula of the compound is X2Y.

The compound has ionic bonds because as X is electropositive and Y is electronegative, there will be transfer of electrons.
