History of Tricolor and Its Importance

A flag is the most significant symbol or element of a country. It symbolizes patriotism, freedom, and unity of the people despite the differences in various fields such as language, race, caste, culture, etc. The tricolor is the honor of the country which unites the people to be one and, have love and affection towards the country. Our flag has a vivid history that makes us proud to be an Indian.

In the year of 1921, Pingali Venkayya, a freedom fighter, had designed a flag for India which was also known as the Swaraj Flag. It was white at the top band, red at the middle band and green at the bottom band along with a Charkha or the spinning wheel spread across the center. The Charkha in the flag symbolized the desire for fréedom from the British rule. Later in the year 1931, the flag was changed by placing saffron at the top band, white in the middle band and green at the bottom band. After the Indian Independence in 1947, Dr. Rajendra Prasad replaced the Charkha with the Ashok Chakra. Now a question arises, why had the colors saffron, white, and green been chosen and what was their significance? Saffron symbolizes courage, white symbolizes peace and green symbolizes faith. The Ashok Chakra has a remarkably interesting meaning to it. It is also known as the Samay Chakra and has 24 lines symbolizing 24 hours of the day making us realize the movement of time. It also stands for different virtues and emotions. The blue color of the Ashok Chakra symbolizes the sky and the universal truth. Our tricolor is a symbol of fréedom and national pride. It makes us realize the sacrifices and the struggles that our freedom fighters have gone through to shape our country and unite all the diverse cultures under one flag. It does not only stand for our entire country but also is an identity to all the citizens and their ambitions. The Indian tricolor has motivated and inspired the citizens of India and people all around the globe to strive in their life.

As expressed above, the Indian flag is a huge pride for our nation. It stands for the sovereignty of the country. Every Independence Day or the Republic Day, one feels the moment of proudness and happiness seeing the Indian flag fly high and make a significant position in the world history. We, as individuals of the country, must respect and give utmost honor to our flag.
