Introduction

India celebrates 151 festivals in a year. That’s a huge number. Out of which, Diwali is the most famous and largely celebrated festival in India as it marks the Hindu New Year. It comes in the month of October or November every year. It is celebrated in the memory of Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya from forests after 14 years. The people of Ayodhya welcomed Lord Ram their houses. They lighted earthen lamps before their houses and they decorated their houses with flowers.

Preparations

Days before, the people start preparations for this festival. People clean their houses, whitewash and decorate them. The merchants paint their shops and set them. The markets get a new look.

How is celebrated

In this festival, people buy new clothes and many things. in the evening the earthen lamps and electric bulbs of different colors are lighted. Crackers are burnt. Goddess Laxmi is worshiped.  People send greeting to their relatives who join to enjoy this festival. Thus this festival increases the feeling of unity and brotherhood.

A dark side of Diwali

On this day many people gamble. Many times the fireworks result in accidents and children fall prey to burns. These fireworks are costly, and wastage of money. If these evils are got rid of, this festival brings the message of a happy future for all alike.

Importance of Diwali

Diwali is the five-day festival of lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. The festival, which coincides with the Hindu New Year, celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

Essay on Diwali

Diwali is a festival of lights. It is one of the biggest and grandest festivals celebrated mainly in India. Diwali is a festival commemorated to mark joy, victory and harmony. Diwali, also known as Deepavali, falls during the month of October or November. It is celebrated after 20 days of the Dussehra festival. The word ‘Deepavali’ is a Hindi word which means an array of lamps (‘Deep’ means earthen lamps and ‘Avali’ means a queue or an array).

Diwali is celebrated in the honour of Lord Ramchandra. As per Hindu mythology, it is believed that on this day Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. During this exile period, he fought with demons and the demon king Ravana who was the powerful ruler of Lanka. On Rama’s return, people of Ayodhya lit diyas to welcome him and celebrate his victory. Since then, Diwali is celebrated to declare the victory of good over evil.
