Gandhiji had become a significant figure among the crowd when he started the salt Satyagraha or the Dandi March in 1930 .

there were many reasons behind this March , but this ANSWER will only discuss little explanation on all reasons + the prime reason.

✒ there was a particular tax which the British government imposed on salt which was the reason why people were high on cutting their diet and were extremely disheartened because of this particular tax and the law which prohibited the civilians to manufacture salt themselves

✒ this tax was resulting in tasteless food for the people because it was a common diet for people - some millet balls , an onion and salt.

✒ this tax also was resulting in a drain of Indian economy and its regulation. thence , a revolutionary movement became extremely necessary .

✒ when petitions to end this tax were refused . Gandhiji started a match from the Sabarmati ashram to the Dandi village , famous for coastal salt... there he himself broke the law himself by boiling water and manufacturing salt from it

The British imposed a salt tax on Indians and prevented them from making salt freely. Those who were caught making salt illegally had it confiscated and were sentenced to prison. Salt tax was termed as a brutal tax as salt was an essential item in Indian food.

Gandhi, along with his followers set out on 12th March 1930 on a March to Dandi, to break the salt law.

Gandhi got arrested in the middle of the march even before they reached Dandi. The rally was then headed by one of his followers.

British soldiers were stationed at Dandi, armed with 6 ft long wooden sticks which were capped with metal on the top.

Gandhi had instructed his followers not to protect themselves by shielding themselves. Thus, the British soldiers beated them. More than 300 people died and more than 450 were injured.
