The Maratha empire expanded from Tamil nadu in the South, Peshawar in the North to Bengal in the East.  Chhatrapati Shivaji was the greatest Maratha ruler known for defeating the Adil Shah dynasty.  The arrival of East India company in India and defeat in the Anglo-Maratha wars led to the decline of the Maratha empire.

Shivaji Bhosale I was an Indian warrior-king and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan. Shivaji carved out an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire. In 1674, he was formally crowned as the chhatrapati of his realm at Raigad.
