the oesophagus performs a movement known as peristalsis movement .it is a movement of the contraction and relaxation of the of the squamous tissue .

The oesophagus is like a streched, flexible pipe that extends to about ten inches in length.

It pushes the food from the throat into the stomach.

However, there is also the windpipe at the back of the throat.

To prevent the food from entering the windpipe, there is a small flap called the epiglottis which closes the opening of the windpipe.
