Identification of unknown substances can be found by..
Smell: Most chemists can identify solvents by their distinctive smells (though this is a pretty bad idea). Melting point: If you’ve got very pure crystals, you can use their melting point to figure out which of several possible chemicals you’ve got.
Color: This is a really rough tool for figuring out what you’ve got.
Generally speaking, this is used to figure out if you’re doing the right thing (i.e. if the product is supposed to be blue and you see blue, you can keep going), but not for identification.
Density: This is used in high school chemistry labs, but not in too many other places.
