Stanza 1

When the humid........soft rain overhead!

Humid shadows - clouds

Hover - hang

Starry spheres - stars

Melancholy - sad

Bliss - utmost joy

Patter - the sound of rain falling on the roof

Explanation of stanza 1

Here the poet says about the stars of the sky which are invisible. They are covered by clouds. He says that the darkness is making him sad and the rain seems to mirror his emotions as it looks like tears that are falling from human eyes. The only thing that can make the poet feel happy and joy to curl up with a pillow in the bed of a rural cottage. Although the rooms of the cottage may be small, the sound of the raindrops can enable him to recover from his sorrow.

Every tinkle on ......... rain upon the roof.

Explanation of stanza 2

Here, the poet describes how the raindrops are making a tinkling sound as they are falling in the shingles of the roof. Each sound of the raindrop is repeated by the beating of his heart. By listening to the sound of raindrops he is recollecting the old memories. These memories formed a patchwork by becoming entwined with one another. They were large in numbers and formed a cluster in the poet's mind.

Explanation of stanza 3-  

In this stanza, the poet describes the first memory that comes in his mind which he could identify from the cluster of memories in his mind. He remembers that in his childhood, his mother looks at the poet and his siblings as they were sleeping and having pleasant dreams. She would make a point to look at them every night, for she knew she would not see them again till the next morning. She would bend down and watch over the poet in particular. This was recalled by the poet after listening to the sound of the raindrops.
