The wording is a little unclear because this could be done in two ways:

8x+10

or

8(x+10)

The first one is "the product of 8 and a number, increased by 10"

The second is "the product of 8, and a number increased by 10"

The one you might write depends on how you say the statement!

In either case, when you read the phrase "a number" in algebra, you make this the variable - whatever letter you prefer (does not have to be

x

!)
