The lecture method is just one of several teaching methods, though in schools it's usually considered the primary one. It isn't surprising, either. The lecture method is convenient and usually makes the most sense, especially with larger classroom sizes.

Lecture method is the oldest and mostly commonly prevalent teaching style in schools which exist even today.  It is a convenient method for a larger classroom size which involves many students.  

Lecturing is nothing but simply an oral presentation. It can also be assisted with some visual aids to make it appealing for the students. Some teachers may use whiteboard or chalk board to assist their lectures. Mostly the teacher remains authoritative and she delivers huge content through this method.  

It has also a couple of disadvantages as it makes the students just a mere listeners for a long time and their attention span is very low and the teachers have to make sure that they limit their lecture and engage the students in active discussion and seminars regarding the subject.
