Formal letters are those letters that we write to a higher authority. Some of the examples include editorial letters, application to your headmaster etc. But informal letters are those letters that we write to someone close.

Formal letter:
Sender's address (only 3 lines without your name)
Leave a line
Date in the form 21st August, 2017 (write the date when u're writing the letter)
Leave a line
Receiver's address without name but if there's a designation, mention it.
Eg:
The Editor,
The Times of India,
Delhi-110001.
Leave a line
Salutation like Dear Sir,
1st para: Introduction of yourself, your place of residence,etc. One line description of the cause of writing the letter (if possible)
2nd para: description of your problem.
3rd para: your suggestions.
Requesting to oblige like “It'll be good if you publish this in your newspaper”, “kindly see through the matter”.
Yours sincerely,
