Write the formula of n-butane and n-pentane. (CnH2n+2 is the general formula of a homologous series of hydrocarbons.)

n-pentane is C5H12 (n=5)


Series of compounds with the same general formula is called as homologous series. CnH2n+2 are a formula of alkanes and this is saturated hydrocarbons.


Here all carbon atoms are bonded with the hydrogen atoms and this is a saturated formula of alkenes. Carbon to carbon bonds made this formal homologous saturated.


If they are double bonded then they can be classified as unsaturated because the formal of double bonded alkanes are DoU = (2C + 2 + N - X - H)/2.
