The formula of the compound that is formed by the ion Ag+ and S^2^- is Ag_2S

  • The reaction occurs when a solution such as silver nitrate is added to any sulfide solution. Here the Ag ions react with sulfide ions which later form silver sulfide which looks like a white precipitate.
  • The combination of Ag ions or silver ions with S^2^- sulfide ions is called silver sulfide.
  • The entire process can be represented as, 2Ag^+ + S^2^- ----Ag_2S
  • Usually to form this compound two moles of silver nitrate are used with one mole of sodium sulfide which produces one mole of silver sulfide and two moles of sodium nitrate.
  • The mixing process can be represented as, 2AgNO_3+Na_2S----Ag_2S+2NaNO_3
  • Here the silver ions are cations and sulfide ions are anions.
