The metal atom in coordination compounds are generally from 3d transition series so the magnetic moment of such compounds can be calculated using the formula

where n is the number of unpaired electrons in the central metal atom. In case of 3d metals there is no contribution of orbital spin and so the orbital angular momentum is assumed to be zero and only spin angular momentum remains from which we can get the above formula. But for 4d and 5d transition series the above formula doesn’t hold as the orbital spin also contributes to the total angular momentum and the situation becomes complex.
