Answer :

When chlorine gas is passed through the slaked lime water then it is rapidly absorbed and produced bleaching powder or chloride of lime or calcium oxychloride and water as a product.

The balanced chemical reaction will be:

Ca(OH)_2(aq)+Cl_2(g)\rightarrow CaOCl_2(aq)+H_2O(l)

The formula of chloride of lime or bleaching powder is, CaOCl_2

The uses of chloride of lime are:

  • It is used for disinfectant.
  • It is used as bleaching agent for the cotton and wood pulp.
  • It is used for the manufacturing of chloroform.

Answer:

Balancing is making the number of atoms of each element same on both the sides (reactant and product side).

To find the number of atoms of each element we multiply coefficient and the subscript

For example 5Ca_1Cl_2 contains

5 × 1 = 5 ,Ca atoms and

5 × 2 = 10, Cl atoms

If there is a bracket in the chemical formula

For example 3Ca_3(P_1O_4)_2 we multiply coefficient × subscript × number outside the bracket to find the number of atoms

(Please note: 3 is the coefficient, and if there is no number given then 1 will be the coefficient )

So

3 × 3 = 9 , Ca atoms

3 × 1 × 2 = 6, P atoms

3 × 4 × 2 = 24, O atoms are present.

So

Let us write  the equation for the formation of Chloride of lime

Ca(OH)_2+Cl_2>CaOCl_2+H_2O

CaOCl_2 is called the chloride of lime which is one of the main  component of Bleaching powder. It is used in bleaching silk, cotton, wool etc., It is a best disinfectant. It is used in the sterilization of drinking water
