The full form of SONAR is Solar Navigation and Ranging.

It works on the principle of reflection of sound. For the determination of depth, SONAR will emit the sound wave into the water. when these waves hit some surface they reflect back and gets back to the sonar. The time taken by the waves to come back is than calculated and the depth is determined by this
