The chime of Escherichia coli (bacterium) lives in the colon which feeds on undigested matter. Consequently, the chime converts into semisolid faeces. As the pellets of faeces enter the rectum, distension of rectal wall induces the feeling of defecation due to "defecation reflex".

The reflect initiates peristalsis in the last part of the colon (sigmoid colon) and the rectum, forcing the faeces towards anus. As the faeces reaches anus, involuntary relaxation of the internal and sphincter muscles and voluntary relaxation of external anal sphincter cause defecation (or egestion). The voluntary actions of the diaphragm and abdominal muscles forces the sphincters open, and the faeces is expelled out through the anus.
