Valves in the human heart ensure one-directional flow of blood.

  • The human heart is divided into four chambers: The upper chambers called the right and left auricles respectively and the lower chambers, called as left and right ventricles respectively.
  • The valves are located between the atria and ventricles, to ensure that blood flows in forward direction only and not backwards.
  • The opening between right auricle and right ventricle is called as the Tricuspid valve.
  • The pulmonary valve is located between right ventricle and pulmonary artery. Once, the blood reaches right ventricle,it starts contracting to build enough pressure that forces the pulmonary valve to open up. Once the pulmonary valve opens, it allows the blood to flow into pulmonary artery.
  • Mitral valve is found between the left auricle and left ventricle. When the blood reaches the left ventricle, it starts contracting to build enough pressure to open the aortic valve which then allows the blood to flow into the Aorta, which is the largest artery in the human body
