Epiglottis protects the windpipe by not allowing food to enter into the lungs.
It is a flap like organ which opens and closes as and when required over the wind pipe.

epiglottis is a flap like structure present on glottis , it prevents entry of food into the wind pipe while eating& it prevents entry of air into the oesophagus while breathing.
